This short sailing course is ideal for those looking to get more from their holiday and gain a new skill whilst exploring the stunning Whitsunday Islands in Australia.

Take this 3 day IYT Introduction to Yacht Sailing course and learn how to handle this modern 43ft yacht whilst living aboard and enjoying the sailing experience.

Enjoy the thrill of overnight anchoring in secluded tropical island bays as your skipper prepares sumptuous meals whilst you chat over the days sailing experiences.

Go learn to sail on this hands-on course, have fun and take home a new sailing skill that will have you at the helm in no time.

Course start dates and schedule
- Sailing courses run every Monday at 9am
- Courses run for 3 days, 2 nights
- You will meet at the marina 30 minutes before you are due to sail
 

Sailing itinerary
- The crew will show you all the best sights of the Whitsunday’s based on guests interests, tide and weather conditions
- Some of the attractions and activities that may be included are:
• snorkelling fringing coral reefs
• beautiful island beaches such as Whitehaven Beach
• bush walks
• island visits
• Observations of marine life
- This is a hands-on course where you'll receive practical sailing lessons for around 8-10 hours per day


What will I learn?
Theory - Module 1 Safety
- Safety precautions: Introduction to use and location of life jackets, flares, Life raft, first aid kit, fire extinguishers, safety harness
- Location and use of: heads, bilge pumps, water pumps, cooker and propane gas, battery selector switch, cabin lights, general housekeeping rules
- Suitable clothing/footwear, effects of heat and cold
- Seasickness
- Do’s and Don’ts aboard a yacht

Theory - Module 1 Planning
- Briefing about passage, to include chart, effect of tides/currents, weather forecasts, courses, safe passage
- Look out and things to watch for
- Keeping track of progress

Practical – Module 1 Ropework
- Coiling a line, securing to cleat
- Tie the following knots – round turn & two half hitches, clove hitch, figure of eight stopper knot
- Safe use of winches

Practical – Module 1 Short Passage – Sail
- Handling sails and halyards, hoisting and lowering sails
- Winches, boom and associated dangers
- Understands the commands for tacking and gybing
- Slipping and coming alongside, Anchor, MOB
- Securing for sea, lookout duties, steering and general duties


Qualifications
- After this short course, you’ll have completed the Introduction to Yachting level and will receive certification allowing you to go on to improve your skills on your next holiday


Live-aboard accommodation
- Accommodation is included for 2 nights onboard the yacht
- There will be up to 7 students for each instructor
- If you are travelling independently, you’ll stay in a shared cabin
- There are twin cabins if two people are travelling together and will be allocated subject to availability


About the boat
- With its modern fit out with all the comforts of a cruising yacht, open plan interior and 8 single bunks with 1 double this well equipped training yacht is a complete sailing yacht 
- It has the latest navigation equipment, hot water and open plan living
- It is also a very fast yacht enabling you to see more of the Whitsunday's


What to bring
- Sun hat, swimmers, towel & sunscreen
- Sneakers or deck shoes to wear onboard
- You are welcome to bring your favourite CD’s and don’t forget your camera!


Weather conditions
- Safety is of upmost importance and in the unlikely event that weather conditions mean that sailing is unsafe, you will be offered alternative dates for the course


RYA and yachting Australia
- The Royal Yachting Association in the UK (RYA) and Yachting Australia each recognise the other’s certificates
- There are, however, additional briefings and testing required by both in order to cover local regulations and requirements
- Depending on the qualification you wish to transfer, there may also be additional requirements to be met, we recommend you check with both organisations for full details
- IYT qualifications are recognised in over 20 countries worldwide
